Prior to the release of The Rise of Skywalker movie, we speculated about how Palpatine could come back from his apparent demise on the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. Decrepit Palpatine Is the Original Emperor’s Spirit Inside a Clone Body Many of my brain cells died to bring you this information. It’s still essentially the same story, but the written version makes it more coherent (for the most part), if no more satisfying on a fundamental level.Īfter reading an advance copy, I’ve assembled the book’s most important revelations, some of which were previously alluded to in interviews with the moviemakers, the Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary, or Carson’s tweets. Unlike the digital film release, the book contains several deleted scenes, as well as additional details that clarify, retcon, or-from a certain point of view-further muddy the movie’s events. Carson’s book seems to stray further from the film than most novelizations, though, largely because the rushed movie version left so much unexplained. The novelization’s cover advertises the book as an “EXPANDED EDITION,” and like all Star Wars novelizations, it does differ slightly from the theatrical release. Fortunately, there is another Skywalker: The Rise of Skywalker novelization, written by Rae Carson and officially published on Tuesday (when the movie was originally due to drop). The two embrace and kiss before Ben and his mother simultaneously join the Force. For fans who weren’t pleased with the divisive final film in the Skywalker saga, the digital version of the release doesn’t sweeten the deal: This is the same film as the one released last December, not the rumored JJ Abrams cut or the movie that Colin Trevorrow might have made if Disney hadn’t dumped him. Ben uses the last of his Force powers fo resurrect Rey. But the power is too much for her, and Rey dies. She uses both Luke and Leia’s lightsabers to reflect the Emperor’s Force lightning back at him, killing him (we are to believe) once and for all. Although exhausted, Rey hears the voices of all the deceased Jedi (including Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker, and Mace Windu) and becomes rejuvenated. As the emperor absorbs lifeforce energy from Rey and Ben, hundreds of ships appear to aid the Resistance. Rey and Ben confront the Emperor while the limited Resistance ships engage a fleet of Star destroyers. Using the wayfinder from Kylo Ren’s ship, Rey heads to the Emperor’s planet while transmitting the coordinates to the Resistance. On Acht-To, Rey speaks with the Force ghost of Luke (Mark Hamill), who tells her that she must confront the Emperor, and gives her a lightsaber that once belonged to Leia. Kylo Ren imagines a conversation with Han Solo, after which he discards his Sith lightsaber and renounces his title, reverting back to Ben Solo. Rey uses the Force to heal Kylo Ren’s wound before leaving on Kylo Ren’s ship to return to Acht-to. ![]() This time, Leia reaches out to Kylo Ren through the Force, allowing Rey to mortally wound him as Leia dies. Kylo Ren destroys the wayfinder and fights Rey again. Upon touching it, she envisions herself as a sith lord. On the Endor moon, Rey finds the Wayfinder in the wreckage of the second Death Star.
